About San Antonio Fighting Back
San Antonio Fighting Back, Inc. owes its existence to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) which began an experiment back in the early 1990’s. Faced with a decade of substance abuse that had reached an all-time high, the Foundation, known as the nation’s largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to health and health care, set out to reduce the personal, social and economic harm caused by substance abuse: tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs.
To achieve that goal, RWJF announced it was accepting proposals for a new program called the Fighting Back initiative. The entities awarded grants would take a grass-roots approach to reducing the demand for alcohol and illegal substances. Drug Free Communities
SAFB’s Drug Free Community Program is focused on youth ages 12-18. Through education efforts and community awareness, this program is focused on reducing substance abuse and substance use in young adults ages 12-18.
Strengthening Youth To Succeed
This program is designed to decrease juvenile truancy through the provision of individual and group counseling to youth who are referred by the Bexar County court system. The program serves 232 youth from each district court and is funded by the City of San Antonio.

- Funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration-Center for Substance Abuse Prevention
- The purpose of Project HOPE is to reduce substance abuse and HIV risk behaviors among 18-24 year olds by offering more access to HIV testing and providing information on how drug and alcohol abuse can lead to HIV/AIDS infection.
- SAFB provides Free HIV testing (confidential/Instant 60 second finger stick). Testers will even come to your home or business and provide free confidential testing
- Free condoms and bleach kits

- Substance abuse & HIV/AIDS prevention presentations
- Additional referral resources available
- Intervention program for young adults 18-24
